Microsoft To Yahoo

Microsoft bites back at Yahoo rejection

In the game of tit for tat going on between Microsoft and Yahoo, the Redmond Giant issued a response late yesterday to Yahoo’s rejection earlier in the week.
Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, issued a statement saying: "Any definitive agreement between Yahoo and Google would consolidate over 90 per cent of the search advertising market in Google's hands. This would make the market far less competitive, in sharp contrast to our own proposal to acquire Yahoo. We will assess closely all of our options.
“Our proposal remains the only alternative put forward that offers Yahoo shareholders full and fair value for their shares, gives every shareholder a vote on the future of the company, and enhances choice for content creators, advertisers, and consumers."
Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer had warned Yahoo that he would lobby stockholders to elect a new board of directors if the current board failed to accept a deal.
Yahoo sent a written response to last week's letter from Ballmer, stating that the board's view of the proposal had not changed.
"We continue to believe that your proposal is not in the best interests of Yahoo and our stockholders," read the statement.
"Contrary to statements in your letter, stockholders representing a significant portion of our outstanding shares have indicated to us that your proposal substantially undervalues Yahoo."
Microsoft proposed a stock deal worth $44bn to buy Yahoo in late January. Yahoo rejected the offer less than two weeks later, saying that the proposed deal greatly undervalued the firm.

MAKAWAO — A decorated, world-class solo bagpiper returns to Maui to headline the Isle of Maui Pipe Band fundraising concert March 14 at Makawao Union Church.Canadian Jack Lee performed at last year’s concert and is pipe sergeant and co-founder of the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. He is to be joined by the university’s award-winning lead drummer, J. Reid Maxwell.Money raised from the concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at the church on Baldwin Avenue, will go toward the purchase of uniforms for the growing pipe band.Lee “quite possibly holds more awards than any piper in history,” said a news release about the event. His solo accomplishments include: • Capturing a gold medal, silver stars and the coveted Gold Clasp, “the premier award in the piping world” available only to former winners of the gold medal, at the Northern Meeting in Inverness, Scotland. • Winning a gold medal and Senior Piobaireachd award at the Highlands and Islands Festival in Oban, Scotland. • Receiving the Bratach Gorm award twice at the Scottish Piping Society of London competition. • Winning the Glenfiddich Piobaireachd contest three times and the Glenfiddich overall championship in Blair Atholl, Scotland, which attracts the world’s top pipers. • Being a 15-time winner at the B.C. Pipers Association annual gathering.Lee, father of three sons, all top pipers, also has a solo piece on Lismor’s “World Greatest Pipers” CD series. In 1999, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the Governor General of Canada for outstanding service to the country. His Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has won four titles at the World Championships in Scotland. The band has made 10 CDs and two videos at venues, including New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House in Australia. Its youth band has won the World Juvenile Championships four times.Lead drummer Maxwell is the first person in history to lead the drum corps of two different bands to the World Pipe Band Championship — in 1995 with Simon Fraser and in 1987 with Toronto’s 78th Fraser Highlanders.Maxwell won four World Drum Corps Championships as a teenager with Scotland’s Dysart & Dundonald Pipe Band and has drummed his way to a dozen world championships. The nonprofit Isle of Maui Pipe Band, originally named Maui Celtic Pipes & Drums, began seven years ago with four pipers in Kula and has grown to 27 members, ranging in age from 13 to 65. The band plans to travel to a top-level Highland Games on the Mainland.Since 2001, the pipe band and drum corps have provided their services for free to Maui Fire Department, Police Department and Veterans of Foreign Wars funerals, memorials and other events. The band also appeared at community gatherings, such as the Maui County Fair and Makawao Fourth of July parades. The band’s musical repertoire encompasses many Celtic nations’ music. It celebrates the playing of bagpipes in the Hawaiian Islands since the 1800s, and often includes an oli, or Hawaiian chant. The bagpipe has a connection to Hawaii sugar plantations, which were staffed with immigrant Scots. There are historical accounts of pipers playing for the alii at Iolani Palace during the 19th century as well as on the Big Island’s Hamakua Coast, once referred to as “the Scotch Coast.”The concert is the main fundraising event of the Isle of Maui Pipe Band. Lee also is giving a weeklong intensive piping-and-drumming workshop to band members.Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Refreshments will be on sale at 6:30 p.m. before the concert.
